SHOULD YOU PAY OFF YOUR DEBT, OR START INVESTING?
Proverbs 13:22 tells us, A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children.
Romans 13:8 tells us, leave no debt outstanding except for our obligation to love one another.
So, if you are in debt, what should you do? Should you pay off your debt first, or should you invest?
That’s a question that I get a lot, and it’s valid. The Bible tells us to do both. If you’re going to leave an inheritance you must invest. And if you’re not going let any debt remain outstanding, then you must pay them off.
Let’s go to the Bible and try to break down what you should do. Should you pay off your debt first, or should you invest?
Alright, before we get into it, it’s important that you make the decision to never borrow money again. That’s most important. Because no matter what direction you choose, if you continue to borrow money, you will continue to be in a poor financial condition.
The Bible tells us, the borrower is servant to the lender. You must make sure that the only one you’re serving is God.
The correct answer is — you should do both.
Yes, there are some extreme cases where you might need to do a little bit of this or a little bit of that, but in general you should do both.
If you don’t, you’re sacrificing one thing for another. So, you’re neglecting your family to pay off debt. Or, are you neglecting to pay someone what they’re owed, so you can increase your investment account balance?
When we invest we leave an inheritance, because we love our family. We pay what we owe, because we love our neighbor and we would want them to do the same thing for us.
We serve a gracious God. Don’t let your past control your future. Make the decision today, with every dollar that comes in, that you’re going to start managing it God’s way.
What is managing money God’s way? We give to God first, because he first gave to us. We invest second. We pay for debts third — and we spend the rest.
That is what you should start doing moving forward.
Yes, you might have made some bad financial decisions in the past. Pray to God. Ask for the strength, the understanding and the wisdom to walk forward in faith — not in fear or regret letting your past hold you back.
You can decide today that you will pay off your debts and invest to leave a legacy for the people you love.
You may feel like you’re in a situation like, “Hey I don’t make enough money.” Understand this, money is meant to serve you, you’re not meant to serve money.
When you find yourself working tirelessly and struggling just to make ends meet, that’s because you’re serving money. You must turn that around and make money serve you. You control your income. You’re in charge of how much you make.
You can go and ask for a raise. You can go and start a side hustle. You can go and learn a new skill, so that you can increase your income.
You must start thinking prosper. Don’t feel like someone else controls what you make. God orders our steps. Trust in God and understand that He gave you all you need to serve other people and sustain your livelihood.
You have something within you that will allow you to make the income you need to turn your financial situation around.
